A Day With My Mentor at DHS

Today I was late for school because I was at my internship at DHS. That is the reason why I did not go to service learning. So I am writing about what happened at DHS today. Well, I got there to meet my mentor at 8:30 and then we walked over to the courthouse. When we got to the court how we checked in and then we went upstairs and waited in the lobby for the case to be called. When the judge called us in I sat in the back and observed. Basically the case was about a girl who was fully mentally retarded and they wanted to keep he in DHS till she was 18. So literally we were in the courtroom for 2 minutes because the judge granted the DHS's wish. Then we left and I went to the library with her. Then we went back to her job and I left shortly after. I had a lot of fun.

Test: Beyond The Line

By seeing that the stable buck was always set apart from everyone because he was black, do you know of anyone who has been treated the same?

There are plenty of people in this world that have been set apart from other people because of their race, personality, religion, or just because they are the person that they are. In the particular case in the book “Of Mice and Men” the stable buck was separated from the white people because he was black. Back in those days the blacks were basically kept away and due to that the stable buck had his own room in the barn. I have met plenty of people like him, but here is this one particular boy that comes to mind. There was this boy in elementary school that I knew named Edward.

Edward was a mentally retarded person. Everyday this boy was made fun of because of something that he really had nothing to do with. So when we would have lunch or do any group activities he would always be excluded. The stable buck was excluded because of his race and Edward was excluded because he was mentally retarded.

Many people would probably compare Edward to Lennie, but that would not be a good comparison. In the days that this book was written, it seems to me that you were better off being mentally retarded than being black. To me that doesn’t make any since at all. That means that a person who can barely say their ABCs or can count to twenty is higher than a person that can do just about anything.

Edward wanted a friend just like the stable buck wanted a friend. Edward would cry when he was alone and I’m sure that the stable buck did the same. But there was a time when hope came for both of them, but then that hope was gone. There was a friend for Edward eventually and that friend was good for him for a while. Then there was that day that, that same boy ended up getting kicked out of school. That would be the same situation with Lennie and the sable buck. Lennie became the stable buck’s friend then Lennie turned around and killed Curley’s wife. That killing ended up with Lennie being killed. That left the stable buck with no friends just like it left Edward with no friends.

In conclusion I would like to say that to me the stable buck and Edward were the same. The fact that a mentally retarded person was better of then a black person really touched me in this book. I believe that we should all be treated equal. The reason why we should treat each other equal is because there will be one day when we will be in the same situation that the stable buck and Edward was in.

Test: Beyond The Line

In any way do you think there was a relationship between any of the characters is this book?

Throughout this book there were many ways that characters were being compared that I could point out. Two characters that I would most likely like to point out the most is the relationship between Candy and his dog and George and Lennie. Candy and his dog went through a lot and George and Lennie also did the same. There are many reasons to this statement, in the beginning of the book Lennie is constantly being compared to a dog, both the dog and Lennie were in misery at the time, and both the dog and Lennie were put out of their misery.

In the beginning of this book when reading it I realized that Lennie was always being compared to a dog. For instance, that book quotes, “George’s hand remained outstretched imperiously. Slowly, like a terrier who doesn’t want to bring a ball to its master…” Also, “Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashes…” These quotes simply prove that the book consistently compares Lennie to a dog.

The second comparison that I would use is that Candy’s dog was in misery; he could not eat, walk, or do plenty of other things. Because of this many of the men that worked at this plantation tried to persuade Candy to kill the dog. For instance, in the book Carlson states, “God awmighty, that dog stinks. Get him outa here, Candy!” “Got no teeth”, and “He ain’t no good to you Candy. An’he ain’t no good to himself. Why’n’t you shoot him, Candy?” Basically Carlson was saying that the dog needed to be put to death because he was no good to himself nor no one else. In that same way Lennie was suffering. Lennie basically could not do anything for himself. He didn’t know right from wrong and in everybody’s eyes and probably as well as his, he was helpless. So George had to kill Lennie like Candy had to kill his dog. It was the only thing to do or they would suffer their way to death and possibly hurt more.

Another way Candy and his dog and Lennie and George were compared was that Candy didn’t kill his dog himself but George killed Lennie himself. When it was time for Candy’ dog to be put off Carlson killed it. Candy even said in the book, “I should have killed him myself.” But he didn’t and because of that he felt guilty. From reading this book I got the understanding that George learned from Candy’s mistake and took matters into his own hands. Instead of letting Curely get a hold of Lennie and killing him, George did it himself.

In conclusion I would like to say that there were many times in this book when I realized that these characters were to be compared. Candy and his dog and Lennie and George compared to each other in three ways. Lennie was always being portrayed as a dog; both the dog and Lennie were in misery, and they both had to be killed because of their misery. Both Candy and George were the ones who were responsible for these two actions.

Once Brothers Now Enemies

When people think of a war they think of a fight between two or more enemies. When thinking of the civil war we realize, it wasn’t a war between two or more enemies, but a war between two brothers. The civil war not only affected the soldiers that fought in it, but also the families and strangers of them. This was a war between brothers known as the South and the North. The civil started when slavery started. Due to this war, soldiers were separated from their family, they suffered from lack of clothes and wounds that ended up in amputation or diseases that ended up in death, and while war was not in progress soldiers and others had to find ways to keep busy.

When reading the book Letter From The War by James G. Basker I realized that many soldiers and their family seemed quite depressed because they were not able to see each other at all. In this book it explains how the soldiers wrote letters to their families to tell what was going on in the war at that time. From reading the letters it showed me that a lot of the soldiers who had sent letters usually died shortly after they wrote their letter them. Many soldiers and family members waited for these letters eagerly. When the soldiers or family members didn’t get their letters as soon as they expected they would be disappointed. “I still live in hopes of getting word from you. I am disappointed every day in getting a letter if you lack of paper buy it if you lack of time to write take time if you lack of envelops and cannot get them send your letter without any. If you can’t get stamps send it any how. If you wil write often I will be glad.” (Joseph Jones, James G. Basker, 9) As you can see from that quote, no matter what was going on they wanted their love ones to write.

The second thing that I wanted to talk about was that the soldiers suffered badly from lack of clothes and the wounds these soldiers suffered from. This site that I read entitled North Avenue Review tells me that it was hard for the soldiers back then. It states, “…because the government would not supply them, the solders had to find another way to get clothing. According to Shotwell, a soldier could not purchase clothing for six months due to lack of venders in the field and the small salaries made by the soldiers” (North Avenue Review, The Hidden War - Morale in the Civil War, by Carl Cox). It also tell me that when they ran out of clothes they would send letters home to ask their family to make extra garments for them. It also tells me that soldiers would barrow clothes and they would also stop to steal clothes from dead enemies. When going back to the book Letter From The War I read a letter from a guy that was writing to his mother. It said, “ I sit down to write you a few lines as I have the chance of sending it by hand there was not much news of consequence in my trip through Kentucky the only thing that happened to me was that my shoes gave out and I had to travel about five hundred miles bare foot my feet were so sore that I could hardly walk one of them had thirteen blisters under the bottom…” That could explain why a lot of people were getting their limbs cut off too. According to The Civil War Society's "Encyclopedia of the Civil War,” “Little was known about what caused disease, how to stop it from spreading, or how to cure it.” Soldiers usually died or had a limb amputated because there was no treatment. From reading this the chances of a soldier not surviving in the civil war was one out of four. From reading a site called The Civil War, it explained to me that, “The state of medical knowledge at the time of the Civil War was extremely primitive. Doctors did not understand infection, and did little to prevent it. It was a time before antiseptics, and a time when there was no attempt to maintain sterility during surgery. No antibiotics were available, and minor wounds could easily become infected, and hence fatal. While the typical soldier was at very high risk of being shot and killed in combat, he faced an even greater risk of dying from disease.”

That brings me into my next topic. While war was not in progress soldiers and others had to find things to do. When typing in the question, what did soldiers in the civil war do in their spare time? I received a really good answer. On YahooAnswers.com someone stated that, “The Civil War gets credit for giving birth to Baseball!! More so among Union soldiers than Confederates, in their spare time troops organized games of baseball…” From reading my school textbook it told me that soldiers would also talk about baseball and play cards. There was really nothing to do because war was not in progress. So they made things to do.

In conclusion I would like to say that there was many problems in the civil war. The problems started with brothers that made them enemies. The north and the south had a lot of history and finally overcame their problems. The north was basically fighting the south because the south had slaves and the north didn’t believe in slaves. They believed that if you touché free ground you were free. They fought the civil war for many years and went through many battles. The soldiers were affected as well as the citizen of these parts. Due to this war, soldiers were separated from their family, they suffered from lack of clothes and wounds that ended up in amputation or diseases that ended up in death, and while war was not in progress soldiers and others had to find ways to keep busy.If you could only imagine the torment that these soldiers went through you would realize that they really fought for our rights and we should be grateful to God for that.

Opportunities at Constitution High School

While attending Constitution High School many students question themselves on whether there are opportunities that are available for them. Well those students have traveled through the dark and found the light.

A school open to a variety of opportunities is what this is. Being as though this school has proud partners like Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, the History Channel, The National Constitution Center, and The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, there are fields of learning open to the wonderful student that attend this school. For instance Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP is a law firm that helps this school very much. Not just financially, but kids attend programs like Mock Trial and some kids have had the opportunity of working there. This law firm also gives each ninth grader a day with an employee and this day is called the Shadowing Day. Another great part of information I received was that The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History provides students with the various textbooks that they read out of form day to day. As we know the National Constitution Center plays a major role in this school and students like to refer to it as their home. Thus, as you can see there are many opportunities available for the students especially at Constitution High School.

“It’s not a melting pot, but we do have a lot of minorities here and we need to get what’s out there for us to make it somewhere,” Malissa Reed 10th grade. There are many minorities in Constitution High School, mostly African Americans and Hispanics. This school has reached out to a law firm that is trying to reach a goal to have more of a minority groups present in to law firms today. Due to this there are many extra curriculum activities, jobs, and scholarships available to the students who want to major in law.

“They are here you just have to find them. Sometimes they are right in front of your face,” stated Cornelius Talley a sophomore at Constitution High School. Talley has attended Mock Trial at Ballard Spahr for one and a half years. He has learned a lot and said that being around lawyers helps him to realize what it is going to be like when he gets older. Many students are saying the same thing. Teachers recommend that kids should go to their counselor and ask for what opportunities are open for your grade level. They also recommend that kids look on the Internet to see what they have open for them on more than a local point of view.

Another student at Constitution High School named Leon Watson 10th grade stated, “It’s wonderful, now have an internship at City Hall because I looked and searched for those opportunities.” As mentioned before students are able to work at law firms and much more, student Julien Jimenez 11th grade felt that just the fact that he went to this school gave him the opportunity to work in a law firm. “Our school gets a lot of recognition which makes it easier for us the student,” he explained.
If you really think you have it for this school and you want an opportunity or opportunities then apply to Constitution High School.

My Season of Summer

Spring or summer, spring or summer? Choosing summer would be great. I’m more mature and strive to be more than I already am. There are many reasons to why I believe that I am in my summer. Religion, grow in the grace of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ… closer to God is what I’ve become. Education, pens out and books off your desk for the test... education is a major part in your life and it can really change your future. Social life, you want to go to the mall… the people you hang around are the ones who influence you. Where you are at in life doesn’t matter to many people, but to me it means a lot.
Primarily, the number on reason why I believe that I have crossed over to the summer is because of my religion. Getting to the point when I felt old enough and grown enough in my religion, I was baptized. Growing spiritually is what I felt like when I was baptized and I’m not as ignorant to my religion as I used to be. For that I feel closer to the Lord. Now I do help out in the church many times. Yet while some kids my age are going out and having fun on days that we have off from school, sometimes I would spend a couple of hours volunteering at my church. Understanding the fact that my grandmother is the pastor of my church, I feel like I have made a closer relationship with her as well as God. My grandmother and I pry with each other and we talk about church a lot also. One of the reasons why I believe that I have crossed over into my summer is because of my religion.
Education, while growing up I realized that to get somewhere you have to be somewhere. Right now I am somewhere, I am participating in an EC class called Mock Trial. Visually I am somewhere (Mock Trial), and I am trying to get somewhere (a judge in the Supreme Court). Dreams are what I follow and becoming a judge in the Supreme Court is what my dream is. Another thing is that I take my education more serious than before. Now I turn in all of my work on time, and I keep myself organized. Where as, when I was in my spring season, I was never organized and I didn’t worry that much about my schoolwork. I check my grade every once in a while so that I know where I need to improve also. People always tell me that I am worried too much about my future because I am always busy at what I am trying to be. But the truth is I am not worried about my future, I’m just trying be the best I can be.
Finally, my social views, I make sure I hang out with the right people. I used to hang out with kids that I always got in trouble with. But now, I hang out with people that have a good environment to their personality. Opportunity is more valuable, the more I stay away from trouble. Also my social life consists of someone special to me and who really does care about me. My boyfriend is really sweet to me and we are both in our summer. Handling our situations maturely is what we do and if a problem comes we know what to do. Life’s socials qualities to me kind of ties back to the story I read, “Marigoes.” The main character Lizabeth was kind of worried about the younger kids that she was hanging around. Considering the fact that she was the oldest one she was felling like she was getting too old for the pranks and jokes they used to do. Honestly, that is how I used to feel. Actually, I would hang around kids that did stupid things, but by stepping into my summer, it is not that way anymore.
In conclusion I would like to say that these are the reasons I am in my summer season and I am proud of this. Virtually, summer is a season when you are mature and you do things that make more sense. Justifying the fact that I am in my summer because of my religion, education, and my social life, I feel more secure. Due to these things I am looked at different. So, what season are you in?

Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note

Looks short, sounds interesting, and doesn’t seem bad. Maybe I will read the “Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note.” I did read it and loved it. This poem happened to be a really great poem and I really liked it. Many reasons to why I liked this poem pops into my head, but since I don’t have much time, I will tell you only a few. Reading this poem was a bit confusing, making me not understand much. Because the poem had a great choice of words, it made the poem sound fantastic. And I loved the religious aspect that the author used.
First of all, this poem was a bit confusing. Eventually when looking at the poem’s title, “Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note,” I think to myself, twenty volumes? While doing that, I’m like well; I wonder where is he at, right now in this note. Going further into the poem, I found a few phrases that I did not understand. One of the phrases was, “And now, each night I count the stars. And each night I get the same number. And when they will not come to be counted, I count the holes they leave.” He seems to be counting the stars, as in, the people who were always there for him, and hen these stars or people are not there, he counts them that left. But what can I say; this is just the message that I’ve gotten from this phrase. Not really knowing how he felt for sure had me a bit confused.
Here comes the second reason. Secondly, I like this poem because of the word choice that Amiri Baraka uses. Purposely, it seems like everywhere in this poem he put the right words in the right places at the right times. For instance Baraka says, “Lately, I’ve become accustomed to the way the ground opens up and envelops me.” Usually when one listens to this, they wonder, well what does he mean by envelops me? Reading this, I wonder, does the ground suck him in. Or does he mean, the ground suck, meaning that earth sucks. Permanently, loving this poem is what I would say, because you really have to read between the lines to understand what the author is trying to say.
Lastly, I like this poem because of its religious aspect. When the father had gone into his daughter’s room, (as explained in the poem) he found her praying. To my daughter's room and heard her. Talking to someone, and when I opened. The door, there was no one there...
Only she on her knees, peeking into. Her own clasped hands.” Just speaking into her own clasp hands, as it seems from his point of view. I like the way that you have to know what praying is to understand this part. It shows that the father does not have a strong relationship with God.
In conclusion, I would like to say, that I really enjoyed reading and writing about this poem. This poem was a bit confusing, which made it good Usage of great word choice made this poem beautiful and I loved that religious aspect of it.
